En el marco del Congreso Internacional de Áreas Marinas Protegidas que se cumplió en Chile, la Isla de Malpelo recibió de parte del Instituto de Conservación Marina el reconocimiento como Refugio Oceánico Global.
Este es un galardón que destaca la importancia de los mares como elementos fundamentales en la supervivencia de especies y ecosistemas marinos con poca representación, endémicos o en amenaza, además de la vida humana.
La Isla de Malpelo fue galardonada junto a otros lugares de alto valor marino ubicados en Hawai, Chile y Filipinas. Malpelo está ubicada a 480 kilómetros de Buenaventura, tiene la novena área marina más grande del mundo. Además es considerada como área de conservación de las aves desde el año 2005.
