La NASA da un paso más en la exploración del universo con un proyecto que en un inicio parecía imposible, pero hoy es una realidad: lograron producir oxígeno en Marte, planeta en el cual tan solo el 0,13% de la atmósfera está compuesta por este elemento, a diferencia de la Tierra.
Como en una película de ficción, en la que los personajes están constantemente en búsqueda de otro planeta para habitar, Marte podría estar acercándose a ese sueño.
¿Cómo lo hicieron?
El 30 de julio de 2020, fue lanzado el Perseverance, vehículo robotizado que fabricó la NASA para explorar Marte, y que llevaba a bordo un instrumento de nombre MOXIE (Experimento de Utilización de Recursos In Situ de Oxígeno en Marte).
Este instrumento sería el encargado de fabricar el oxígeno y que, en el futuro, los astronautas que pisen el planeta rojo se puedan abastecer directamente de este. En efecto, se logró la misión de acuerdo a una investigación publicada en Science Advances.
El informe dice que en siete oportunidades a lo largo del año, MOXIE generó aproximadamente 15 minutos de oxígeno por hora, es decir, poco más de 100 minutos o 50 gramos de oxígeno respirables para un astronauta.
Un éxito rotundo
Para añadirle más emoción a los resultados del proyecto, MOXIE no solo generó el oxígeno, sino que lo hizo en medio de una variedad de situaciones climáticas adversas, de día o de noche, en temperaturas extremas e incluso luego de tormentas de polvo, entregando un producto respirable “al más alto nivel”, como lo manifestó Michael Hecht, del Observatorio Haystack del Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts (MIT) y que codirige el experimeno.
Para hacerlo, el instrumento usa dióxido de carbono, el gas más abundante en la atmósfera marciana, presente en casi el 96%. Entonces, el aparato extrae los átomos de oxígeno para producir gas oxígeno.
Ahora, queda asegurar el funcionamiento de una unidad como MOXIE más grande, que produzca más oxígeno para los astronautas.
